I Believe in Miracles

IMG_0006

Joyce, this is for you. Why I believe God is working powerfully in your life. My novice master once said to me, “God helps Fools and Children, and you are no Child!” I sometimes think when the blessed Mother and Jesus want to have a good laugh, they say, “Let’s send John out again, and see what he does this time!” LOL

Here are a couple of stories to prove this:

God gives Free Tickets to Disney World

When I was in High School my best friend got a van and went out to California. It was hippy time and this was common. While there he got in a little trouble through bad friends who wanted him to experience the darker side of life. I went to Fort Lauderdale to meet him and do “beach evangelism” with Akron University’s IVCF. I never found them, but hooked up with Tom. I put a little card in our hotel room “Just for today, keep us from sin”! We got kicked out of his sister’s room  by the manager (for staying in the closet) and had to move on to our next stop, Disney World. Friends who were sisters, and down there from Akron said they would drive us! The winds started blowing, and with all there luggage on top of the roof two feet high, driving became unsafe. Like Jonah, we said “let us out” and it will be OK. To our surprise, they pulled over and let us out on the highway, giving us some of the fish we caught that day.  There we ate and slept, in the tall grass of the exit ramp. When we woke up we started hitchhiking to Disney. Something came over me, wanting to convert my friend, and I said,  “I am going to pray that the 3rd car gives us a ride!” How bold…

1-2-3 Screeechh and the car stopped. One one fender was a Disney bumper sticker, and on the other it said “Praise the Lord”. We ran up and the man was on his way to work at Disney, drove us past the door for free admission and gave us each $25 in ride tickets he got as a staff person. My friend does not remember this story, but God is good, I had just enough money to take a Greyhound bus home, and wouldn’t have if I paid to go to Disney.  God loved me, when I meant for him to help my friend!

Mom’s Video Niece finds a home in Mother Church

I was applying to join St. Andrew’s Abbey in Cleveland, Ohio.  I had to drive there to visit from the east side of Cleveland and since I always get lost, I got off at the wrong exit and stopped at Mom’s video to ask for help.  The woman behind the counter said to me, “St. Andrew’s Abbey, my uncle is the Abbot there. Abbot Roger Gries.  He has always wanted me to get confirmed in the church!” I was surprised, but learned to never waste a chance to help someone, I said I had a pocket catechism at home and next time I was near, I would bring it to her.  My storage boxes at home were a mess so for some reason I cleaned them that week, and found my last copy of the Knights of Columbus 4-week catechism. I stuck it in my car, for that girl.

Well next week I got lost again, and was sitting in the parking lot too embarassed to go in and ask for directions again. I went in and there she was again.  I gave her the booklet and said “let’s schedule the next 4 weeks for you to get classes at the Abbey.” She agreed, and came to all of them. Abbot Roger confirmed his niece as he had wanted on that Easter Sunday. Strangely I never heard from her again, even though I called her parish to follow-up. I have often prayed for her though. One other non-coincidence, I ended up at Mom’s video after she was confirmed to say, “Hi!”. But she was no longer there. She has quit three days after my last visit, and if I had not asked her then, after my second visit, I never would have had a chance.  It was God’s perfect timing…wow!, he can even use the “lost person” to help a child come home….

“A Strike that Taught Me What is Important”, by John “Jack” Mellody

State to close home for disabled, fate of other centers in doubt

This is the story that changed my life. I have shared it with many youth ministers since then, of how important helping the poor is to High School Students.

As far as I can remember Apple Creek Development Center went on strike in 1974, and friends of mine from high schools all over Akron, went in as volunteers to take care of the very critical patients. We did not know how critical their needs were. I worked with a twenty year old male who was in a 8 foot high crib, where the metal bars on the side looked like like a jail. Inside was a person who was so thin you could see his bones. I lowered side-rail and began to feed him what looked like baby food. I next changed his diaper and then was told to turn him, so he would not get bed sores. I suddenly realized I had spend a lot of my time in high school trying to look cool to my fellow students. This man did not care if I was cool, but only if I could meet some very basic needs. (Tear). It showed me what was really important!

One of the members of our group, John Ballard Jr. was the Mayor of Akron’s son. He knew Sen. Oliver R. Ocasek, who was in charge of the State Ohio Senate at the time. He told him that high school students were taking the place of staff at Apple Creek, and the Institute needed financial help to end the strike. Sen. Ocasek, agreed to add 1.2 Million Dollars to the state budget, and ended the strike. (I tried to validate dates, but online newspapers did not go back that far. I am identifying on Facebook others who were there to help correct 40 years ago memory)

Others there: Marguerite Gebhart Coffield, Mark Ballard, Ward Ballard (not sure), John Ballard, Maureen McCusker, Mary Cavanaugh, Eleanor Dillon

Just for today

A moment a flash of victory, is all I need to be set free. Sometimes i am sad and cannot see, all my Lord you have given to me.

In king David’s poems he cries out so he can see, you loved him first as you have done for me. Somewhere in dark corners clean and free, your silent voice slowly reminds me.

We have only to love and only today, and God will help us , come what may. Just for today be kind to others, remembering in God we are all brothers.

So smile and laugh when pain comes your way, rembering Christ’s words it is enough for each day (Matthew 5). If you can love in small little ways, then it will be enough just for today.

Anxiety that binds my gut

Tightening around me like chorded rope
Makes me feel there is no hope.
I use my mind to stop the pain, but
It is no use he laughs like one insane.

I cry out, with a scream, I can’t stand the pain, a hospital won’t cure it, I can’t get it to change…

Jesus my savior, here my prayer, my feet are moving, but feel only air.

Please lord help others, I feel their pain, by focusing on them, it keeps me sane.

I’ve paused now and Mass is done, there is nothing inside now that makes me run. Except one thing quietly i whisper too, is that the kindness to my daughter sees me through.

“Cast all Your Anxieties on Him for He cares about you” (1 Peter 5:7 NAB)

“Cast all Your Anxieties on Him for He cares about you” (1 Peter 5:7 NAB)

Advice to the Community.*

5 Likewise, you younger members,* be subject to the presbyters. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for:

“God opposes the proud but bestows favor on the humble.”c

6 So humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.d

7 Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you.e

8 Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for [someone] to devour.f9Resist him, steadfast in faith, knowing that your fellow believers throughout the world undergo the same sufferings.10The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory through Christ [Jesus] will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little.g11To him be dominion forever. Amen.

POEM: Father’s Day

Why do we celebrate Father’s Day?
Is it just another date, that come our way ?

I remember as a boy it meant a lot,
Sometimes in prayer I see my dad,
And know he loves me here or not,
Even though sometimes he made me sad.

Today we are happy he is at rest,
And now I know that always did his best.
I’m not perfect, (just ask my wife)
But hope to love my daughter all my life.

Sometime I get angry when she is bad ,
but I’ve learned that’s all just part of being a dad.

But she hugged me and loved me on Father’s Day,
and made me feel special in many ways.
God knows my imperfections and still loves me,
and he’s the model of fathers for you and me.

So when you question why we have this day,
remember God the father who shows us the way,
it is he who loves us every day!
